“Attitude is a choice. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference.”

– John Wooden, Legendary College Basketball Coach

As a coach, you know that talent alone doesn’t create great athletes—attitude does. The right attitude is what pushes athletes to go beyond their limits, to keep working even when they’re exhausted, and to believe in their ability to overcome obstacles.

So how do you develop a positive attitude in your players? Start by encouraging a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. It’s crucial that your athletes understand that their skills aren’t fixed; they can always improve, and mistakes are simply part of the learning process.

Another powerful way to instill a positive attitude is to teach athletes the importance of mental conditioning. Just as they train their bodies to perform, they must also train their minds. Techniques like visualization, positive affirmations, and mindfulness exercises can help athletes build mental resilience.

And let’s not forget about creating a supportive environment. A player’s attitude can thrive when they know they’re supported by their coach, teammates, and family. Encourage a culture where athletes uplift each other, offer constructive feedback, and celebrate each other’s progress.
